Settlers Hut (The)
A restored 1840s colonial cottage, The Settlers Hut is situated in the historic village of Berrima in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. In 2001, The Settlers Hut was awarded winner Most Romantic Getaway in NSW and awarded four and a half stars by the Sydney Morning Herald.

The Settlers Hut, situated in its own private garden at the rear of Jellore Cottage, offers a cosy and intimate getaway for two people. Overlooking the Wingecarribee River, platypus can be seen playing at dawn and dusk.

The rough hewn slab walls and carefully selected rustic colonial bush décor enhance the amazing ambience that The Settlers Hut exudes. Consisting of three rooms in total, the main room is a traditional living space complete with a Victorian Iron Tester bed and accompanying luxurious linen. This room also features a large open fireplace with easy chairs. A range of books and a compact disc player is also provided for your entertainment as well as gas heating for year round comfort.

At the rear of the hut a period kitchen has been recreated, lined with hand hewn slab walls and fitted with cupboards and benches of recycled timber. You may choose to prepare breakfast, provisions for a hot breakfast are provided, or a romantic evening meal on the classic early Kooka gas stove. The kitchen has a fridge and all necessary utensils. There is an abundance of local cafes and restaurants serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for those who want to relax entirely.

The third room, the bathroom, is complete with an old fashioned claw foot bath and shower. Located in the front garden is a former stable now a traditional rustic dining room with outside BBQ facilities. At the rear of The Settlers Hut another hut is located which was once an old dairy, this is now a laundry providing a washing machine and dryer for longer stays.

Shrine Of Our Lady Of Mercy Catholic Church - Penrose Park
Penrose Park withits various devotinal areas in a setting of natural beauty, serves as a spiritual oasis open to everyone who wants to meet with Our Lord Jesus Christ and his Mother the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Our Shrine is totally dependent on the goodwil and generous charity of all our visitors. The Pauline Fathers would like to thank all those people who have been, and are supporting them through their prayers, work and donations.

In 1984 the Shrine of Our Lady of Mercy at "Penrose Park" was founded. On 24 May 1997 the new Church was consecrated. This new Church, together withthe new monastery is a lasting testimony to the faith and generosity of the pilgrims who support it. On 26 August, 2001 the holy Icon of Our Lady of Jasna Gora was solemnly crowned with crowns blessed by Pope John Paul II

We invite all pilgrims to the celebration of the Novena to Our Lady of Mercy on the Fist Saturdays of each month. We pray that , as a fruit of the coronation, Our Lord and His Blessed Mother will pour avundant blessings upon our country and all people.

St Maur Southern Highlands Estate
St Maur honours the tradition of its Italian heritage and embraces the philosophy that good wine can only be made from good grapes.

St Maur has 16 acres under established vine and our varieties include Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.
We harvest our grapes in mid to late autumn and prune heavily to control the leaf growth. This ultimately limits the grape quantity but produces a more intensely flavoured grape.
The result; a collection of cool climate wines that is regionally distinctive and vineyard expressive.
In addition to cultivating wine, St Maur is a fully working farm. It is home to a herd of pasture fed Black Angus cattle, Suffolk sheep and chickens.

Throsby Park Historic Site
Set on 74 ha of southern-highlands grazing land, the homestead's historic farm buildings provide an interesting illustration of life as an early colonial landholder. The site protects the colonial Georgian Throsby Park house, home to five generations of the Throsby family, and its associated farm buildings including the former barn, flour mill, the original stables. Throsby Park is listed on the National Estate, National Trust and State Heritage registers.

Established around 1834 by Charles Throsby, on land granted by Governor Macquarie the main family house was extended over the years to its present size of 27 rooms - most of which are still furnished with Throsby family furniture today.

Open only by arrangement (available for group bookings) and on periodic open days; fees apply for tours. School education programs are conducted on request.

Throsby Park is now owned by the Historic Houses Trust.

Tourist Drive 13
Tourist Drive 13 is the most adventurous of all the Southern Highlands Tourist Drives. The road is suitable for conventional cars and wagons but it is not for caravans.
Hidden in the Southern Highlands is the natural marvel of Wombeyan Caves. The most direct route to Wombeyan is via Mittagong along a winding, scenic mountain road.
Once you have turned off the Old Hume Highway, Wombeyan Caves Road will take you through pastureland and watch as the scenery changes into a more rugged bushland setting. This part of the drive is known as High Range. The sealed section of this road ends approximately 25kms after you leave the Old Hume Highway, from here on you will find an unsealed winding road for approximately 40kms until you reach Wombeyan Caves.
Along the way you will pass through the Rock Tunnel, an interesting “wonder of nature – with a little man-made help” and stop at the Burragorang Lookout (on your right). This section of the countryside is known as Bullio. The road continues to wind through spectacular scenery and up and around mountains until eventually it winds down to the Wollondilly River and Goodmans Ford. This is an idyllic spot to camp, picnic, fish or just relax and soak up the tranquility of the area.
From Goodmans Ford it is only 16kms further along to Wombeyan Caves, an excellent outing for adults and children alike. There are self guiding caves, guided tours and for those that are fit and want more excitement there are adventure caves (wild caves).
Overnight accommodation is available telephone us on 1300 657 559

Tourist Drive 14
Tourist Drive 14 commences as you leave the F5 Expressway. As the road straightens you will come through the village of Braemar. Continue into Mittagong passing the Highlands Golf Club and Mittagong Caravan Park.

Welcome to the town of Mittagong. Settled in 1821 and the home of the first iron smelting works in Australia. It was thought that the town would become a large industrial centre as coal, shale and iron were found in large quantities. The mining companies folded one by one and now all that remains of that era are the many gracious old buildings and small charming cottages, built form local timber and sandstone.

The Southern Highlands Visitor Information Centre is also located in Mittagong.
Continue through Mittagong to Bowral. There are many specialty shops to browse through and a variety of cafes and restaurants. Bowral’s famous International Cricket Hall of Fame, is just a short walk from the town centre.

As you continue onto Moss Vale you will come across The Briars Inn circa 1848 and the more recent addition of the Country Lodge. Just down the road call into the Cecil Hoskins Nature Reserve, a great place to relax a while and nearby the Bong Bong Track (shared pathway) along the river. Cross the Wingecarribee River on your way into Moss Vale. Take in the Old Clock Tower, the Historic Walk and Leighton Gardens.

After leaving Moss Vale travel through rich grazing lands to Sutton Forest. On your left you will see the entrance to "Hillview", the former Vice Regal residence. Once in the village the Sutton Forest Inn and the Everything Shop are on the right. The Highlands Equestrian Centre for anyone interested in furthering their horse-riding skills is situated on the right just after the intersection.

Rejoin the South Western Freeway (Hume Highway) a little further down the road.

Tourist Drive 15
To really do this drive justice allow yourself plenty of time to fit everything in. Heading east from the Kangaloon Road roundabout in Bowral you will pass Horderns Road leading to Milton Park on your left and the Bong Bong Racetrack on your right. Continue on until you reach the Kangaloon Road intersection. Turn left here and just along the road you will find the Wingecarribee Reservoir and picnic area on your right. As you continue winding your way up the hillside you will pass sheep and cattle grazing on emerald green pasture. Proceed into the villages of Kangaloon and East Kangaloon. Look out for the old church and cemetery. Dry stone walls are a feature of this area. From here the road proceeds into the township of Robertson.

The entrance to Robertson is marked by huge old gum trees. This quaint rural town boasts a variety of interesting shops, including the Old Robertson Cheese Factory and Robertson Recollections. Not to be missed is the Robertson Nature Reserve (rainforest). Follow the Tourist Drive signs down Pearsons Lane to Belmore Falls, one of the three scenic waterfalls in the area offering visitors a range of walking tracks and lookouts, including Hindmarsh Lookout, form which to appreciate the beauty of this escarpment country.

Short detours form this drive will lead you to Wildes Meadow and the village of Burrawang.
Back on the Tourist Drive the road leads you to Fitzroy Falls reservoir and Picnic Area. The facilities here are excellent and even include boiling water on tap! Further on you will find Fitzroy Gallery and the Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre operated by the National Parks & Wildlife Service. Here you will find the magnificent Fitzroy Falls, bushwalks and a very welcome “cuppa” at the Falls Café.

The road from Fitzroy Falls continues onto Moss Vale taking you past strawberry and berry farms. In Moss Vale you will find amazing antique shops, unique bookshops, Leighton Gardens and a variety of eating places.

Starting at Moss Vale the drive to Sutton Forest along the Illawarra Highway is only 6kms.

From Sutton Forest to Exeter you will see extremely picturesque countryside, with rolling green hills and pastureland on both sides of the road. Exeter village is where you can see a fine example of an English style stone church and many beautiful private estates.

In Bundanoon you will find Glow Worm Glen (best time to view is night), in the Morton National Park. Bundanoon is ideal for bushwalking, camping and picnicking. Cycling is also popular with a great cycle hire shop right in town. From Bundanoon you will pass through the villages of Penrose, Wingello and Tallong. The road then intersects with the Hume Highway. Turn right and 29kms further on is Goulburn.

The drive is ideal for those looking for an alternative, scenic route to Canberra.

Mittagong to Moss Vale via Berrima Tourist Drive 17
Length approximately 24km

Tourist Drive 17 commences in Mittagong. The Southern Highlands Visitor Information Centre is located here and offers a wide range of souvenirs, maps and local produce. Just down the road is Winifred West Park which offers picnic facilities, toilets and a playground for children.

A detour on your right will lead to Lake Alexandra at the end of Queen Street. Relax a while and feed the ducks whilst enjoying a picnic basket or a short stroll around the lake. In the township browse through antique, craft and needlework shops or enjoy the cafes, restaurants or visit the Mittagong RSL Club.

Follow the Tourist Drive along the Old Hume Highway crossing over the Freeway. Near the Freeway exit you’ll find the Box Vale Walking Track. The 4.4km track has easy grades and the return walk takes about 3 hours. Continuing on to Berrima you will find Berkelouw Book Barn on your right. For the bookworm you will find over 200,000 secondhand books. At Greenhills Road turn right, travel for approximately 7kms to taste cool climate wines from local vineyards.

Back on the road it is only a short journey to the historic village of Berrima. Considered one of the best remaining examples of a small Australian town built in the 1830’s. Many of the original buildings have been sensitively resorted and now trade as craft shops, galleries and restaurants. One of the original coaching inns, the Surveyor General is still operating. A convict built gaol is still in use and Berrima Court House (open daily) is classified by the National Trust.

Leave Berrima by crossing the Wingecarribee River, run left at Francis Xavier Church. You will pass through rural countryside on your way to Moss Vale.

Moss Vale was founded on the ground which was originally granted by Governor Macquarie to Charles Throsby in 1819.

Features include trimmed hawthorn hedges, a nut orchard, a secret vegetable garden, a formal parterre flower garden with gargoyle fountain, crab apple walk, massed bluebells under silver birches and some 90 year old elm and oak trees, as well as the large duck pond adn pavillion.

4 Earl Street, Mittagong
This native garden is a fine example of the diversity of gardens in the Southern Highlands. Set on a level one acre site near the top of Mt. Gibraltar, it blends modern architecture with Australian native plants (there are just two exceptions - see if you can spot them when you visit). Much of the indigenous flora has been maintained and enhanced by the introduction of other Australian species and cultivars. A lovely courtyard adjacent to the house features cleverly pruned mellaleucas which create a sculptural effect. This ecologically sensitive garden is the result of 14 years hard work by its dedicated owners.

Afternoon Tourist Drive
Highlights
Mittagong, Bowral, Berrima, Sutton Forest, Moss Vale, Wineries, Specialty Shops, Art & Crafts.

Overview Read through this drive first. If you want to do everything, it may take most of the day. Otherwise, just choose what interests you most and make an afternoon out of it. The drive begins in Mittagong and heads into historic Berrima. From here you continue down the Hume Highway, exit onto the Illawarra Highway, and explore Sutton Forest and Moss Vale, before returning to Bowral or Mittagong.

The Drive. Make the Southern Highlands Visitor Information Centre your first call. Here you can get all the information you need before you begin your drive. Set aside some time to explore the arts, crafts and antiques of Mittagong. Behind the Visitor’s Centre, in Range Road, browse through the Sturt Gallery, Workshops and Café. Then head back into the main strip of Mittagong and park the car. Stroll through the Mittagong Antiques Centre and the many individual dealerships throughout the town.

If you have kids on board, then a quick trip to McDonald’s could be worthwhile, or maybe the Mittagong RSL Club, which offers excellent facilities.

Journey out of Mittagong along the Old Hume Highway (don’t exit onto the Freeway) and enjoy the rural landscapes, berry farms and vineyards along the way.

If wine tasting is on the agenda, then Howards Lane Vineyard is located in the vicinity, left off the Hume Highway. Back on the highway, you continue towards Berrima.

Booklovers will be able to enjoy a stop off at the famous Berkelouw Book Barn on your right about 2kms before Berrima.

OR, wine buffs should take the Wombeyan Caves Road turnoff on the right and along here you will find cellar doors galore. Choose from Bou-saada Vineyards and the Tertini Wines, both in Kells Creek Road, then back onto Wombeyan with the McVitty Grove Vineyard just down the road. Here you can also have a light lunch or excellent cup of fresh coffee. From here turn left into Handleys Lane and onto the corner of Greenhills and Joadja Roads where you will find another cellar door in Joadja Vineyards and Winery. Travel back along Greenhills Road and along the way look out for the Alpaca stud on your left-hand side. This is a magnificent property and well worth a look from the roadside. Then its back to the Old Hume Highway and into the village of Berrima.

In Berrima, park your car and continue on foot. Afternoon tea and refreshment spots abound in this pleasant village; enjoy hot scones, or perhaps a cold Guinness is more to your taste. Historians will be fascinated with the Berrima Court House and Museum, while shoppers will be delighted with the array of galleries, specialty shops and antiques stores.

Depart Berrima along the Old Hume Highway and head south through the rural landscape for about 12kms until you see Eling Forest Winery on your left. Take some time to visit this beautiful property which, in addition to its vineyard and winery, also has a B&B, restaurant, coffee shop and wedding marquee.

Wine buffs back onto the Highway, head south for approximately 4kms before taking the exit ramp to the left. Travel over the bridge and to your right is Black Horse Lane. Down here you will find Sutton Forest Estate Wines. Now head back over the bridge, turn left and then right at the roundabout onto Sallys Corner Road for about 2 klms and on left is Sallys Corner Wines. Continue on Sallys Corner Rd and turn left into Old Argyle Road. The St Maur Southern Highlands Estate Cellar Door is just on your left. Continue on Old Argyle Road until the T intersection and turn right – this is the Illawarra Highway. Not far down this road is Sutton Forest. This quaint historic village has a pub and antiques and old wares shop.

Head towards Moss Vale from Sutton Forest on the Illawarra Highway, and you will pass through some of the district’s most expensive rural holdings. On your right is Hillview Estate, which was originally a former Vice Regal Country Residence. Closer to Moss Vale you will see Kater Road on your right which leads to the entrance for Peppers Manor House and the Mt Broughton Golf and Country Club. Just past Kater Road on the left you will see Oldbury road and one of the largest vineyards and wineries in the region, Southern Highland Wines.

In Moss Vale there are antique and specialty shops, or maybe you’d like to enjoy a cool drink in the lush Leighton Gardens in the centre of town.

Continue along Moss Vale Road into Bowral, the business hub of the Southern Highlands, where you will find excellent shopping, the famous International Cricket Hall of Fame, and a wide choice of places to catch an early supper or late afternoon tea.

From Bowral, its simply a matter of following the Bowral Road back to your starting point of Mittagong.

Book Barn Cottage
The Book Barn Cottage is a leisurely 90-minute drive from Sydney, Canberra and Wollongong. The perfect country retreat for couples, friends, families and book lovers!

Formerly the gatekeeper's lodge for the historic 1839 'Bendooley' homestead, in autumn 2011 the self-contained cottage was lovingly restored and completely refurbished in a warm, contemporary style.

It is set amidst the green rolling hills of the Southern Highlands, opposite the Bendooley vineyard and just a short stroll to the Berkelouw Book Barn and Antiquariat , which houses many rare and fine books, maps and prints.

The accommodation comprises two spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms (shower and one bath) and the house comfortably sleeps up to five people.

The master bedroom, a high quality king-size bed with luxurious linen and electric blankets has its own spacious ensuite and a verandah overlooking the garden, with established trees and views of the Highlands.

The second bedroom features a high quality king-single with trundle and another king-single bed (also with crisp white linen and electric blankets) and can accommodate three adults or three children.

Both bedrooms have generous built-in wardrobes, and large windows to appreciate the views of the garden, the vineyard and the beautiful surrounds.

The light-drenched and cosy open-plan kitchen is well equipped, if you wish to cook for yourself, containing a gas cooktop and oven, microwave, a kitchen grill ( gas barbecue on the verandah of the living room), fridge and freezer, dishwasher, and all necessary cooking utensils. Alternatively, you might like to wander up to the Book Barn Cafe and enjoy a bowl of Philippo's delicious soup with homemade bread, tasty Italian and Australian country kitchen fair, a cup of coffee or tea and scones.

The Cottage's dark wooden floors, plush new carpets, its palette of natural colours, comfortable contemporary furnishings & countless books, and open fireplace make the house instantly warm, welcoming and relaxing. In the cooler months the cottage is also heated with a ducted gas heating system which provides a pleasant, even heat.

Entertainment options include an LCD television, a DVD/CD player with iPod connector and a multitude of books of all genres.

The garden is lined on one side by a huge hedge and on the other by a paddock. It is fully enclosed, which makes the cottage suitable for families with young children. There is off-street garage parking in front of the cottage for one car and plenty of space for further vehicles. Sorry no pets permitted.

Most visitors arrive at the Book Barn Cottage with a load of groceries or order our "hide away" grocery basket, browse the in-house library or the Book Barn, light a roaring fire and don't travel too far once they've settled in.

However, there is plenty to do in the area, both on and off the property.

Our vines are planted over 80 acres consisting of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdalho, Riesling, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Gris, Albarino, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Currently we export our wines to Singapore, Korea, China, & USA. Our success is due to our commitment to producing quality wines at all costs.

Ghost & Historical Tours of Berrima
Come with me on a night time walking tour to remember. You will be entertained by stories of the Berrima of by-gone days where bushrangers roamed and wreaked havoc, stocks stood in the Market Place and floggings and hangings took place. Visit places where history was made and soak up the atmosphere with tales of murder, misadventure and mystery.
If you don't believe in ghosts when we start, you may by the time we finish! Be prepared for the unexpected?

I will take you to important places in the village where prisoners were sentenced and hanged. You will hear the stories why 5 people were hanged at Berrima, how some of them decided to stay in Berrima after the event and the impact they have made by their presence.

On the tour, you will hear the many tales about past and recent sightings (and incidents!) of the ghostly kind, visiting the locations where these events occurred. And you will discover who Mrs Mulligan was, as well as her gruesome fate.

The tour takes approximately 2 hours. It is recommended you wear (or bring) warm clothes and walking shoes, rain gear, a torch and a digital camera.

Gibbergunyah
Gibbergunyah Reserve is one of contrasts with secluded, shady walking trails and sunny, rocky outcrops to picnic on - a calm respite from the hurly burly of town. At over 800 metres ‘Ninety Acre Hill Lookout’ has sweeping views of the distant Blue Mountains from its lichen clad boulders. Wombats and echidnas make their lairs in the crevices of the rocks below. There is a view of Mount Gibraltar from the ‘Gib Lookout’.

The bushland ranges from open woodland on the drier edges to tall moist fern-carpeted forest in the deeper gullies and is typical of sandstone ridges in the area. A variety of brightly coloured flowers bloom according to the season and tall banksia await fire to open their spiky, rock-hard seed-pods.

The 200ha Reserve which is roughly 1.5km square links Mittagong and Bowral. It may be entered from either. From Mittagong the northern access is at the end of Howards Lane, Welby. Access from Bowral is via a walking track beside a fairway of the Bowral Country Club. Trail Maps are located at both entrances.

Harper's Mansion
High on the hill overlooking the historic colonial village of Berrima is Harper's Mansion. The 1834 two storey brick house proudly sits in a couple of acres of fine cool climate gardens. Its newly completed maze is the only one of its kind in NSW.

Plants in the garden include Achanthus, Achillea (yellow 'Moonshine'), Aquilegia, Artemesia (wormwood), Arum lily, Aster Daisy, Ceratostigma tomentose, Echinacea, Erigeron, karvenshianus (fleabane), Geranium endreseii (cranesbill geranium), Gunnera manicata (swamp rhubarb), Heliotrope, Helleborous, Hermeocallis lily, Houttuyania, Incavillia, Iris (ensata, Siberian), Iris unguicularis, Lavender angustafolia, Nepeta, Penstemon var., Polygonatum, Salvia (at least 12 var. both large & small), Scabiosa, Sedum, Sisyrinchium striatum, Stachys byzantina, Tradescantia (spiderwort), Veronica. Bulbs include Grape hyacinths and Jonquils.

The roses planted along the fence line from the front of the house down to the gate were selected for their suitability by Heather Cant, a local National Trust member and noted gardener and rose collector. The selection was based on the period when Harpers was built and for their continuous flowering habit. These roses include Rosa Lamarque, Cecile Brunner, Honorine de Brabant, Belle Poitevine, Duchesse de Brabant, Souvenir de Mme Leonie Viennot, Mme. Alfred Carriere, Mons. Tillier, Blanc Double de Coubert, Irish Rich Marble.

The garden also boasts a long hazelnut walk, a large pond home to native frogs and an old well.

A special delight for children, young and old, is the extensive maze, formed by a tall leylandii hedge, planted in 2000, and now coming into its own.

The House has been extensively restored and is now a superb example of an early Australian Georgian country house.
Local Trust members, and Berrima residents, recently formed a new group Friends of Harper's Mansion to again open the grounds of this superb National Trust property to the public. Funds raised by the Friends will be used to furnish the House in early colonial style and to support the Trust.

The garden of Hillview is in 2 distinct parts: The Government Garden and The Klein Additions.
The development of the garden has been analysed in detail and concludes that the different aspects of the garden are of significance for a range of reasons and that both principal elements should be retained with some modification in order to retarin and recover significance.

The key elements of the garden are its hilltop setting, the surviving early elements from the late Victorian garden, the strong design and form of the Klein garden and its somponent parts, the vistas and views to and from the garden and some of the rare and fine plantings that are found within the broader garden precinct.

Howards Lane Vineyard

The Vineyard
Howards Lane Vineyard spreads below the northern slopes of the Gibbergunyah bushland, adjoining Bowral and Mittagong. Views from the farm range over the undulating hills of the Southern Highlands and at dusk yellow-tailed wallabies emerge from the bush to graze close to the Cellar Door. Corrie vineyard, one of the first established in the region, ten years ago, is planted to Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon producing at most just 8,000 bottles a year.

The secret of this region’s growing reputation as a source of premium wines is in the slow ripening of the fruit, with harvesting as late as April or May. The farm is 800m at its peak ensuring ‘cool climate’ growing conditions. Crop levels are reduced, there is minimal irrigation and the resulting small berries ensure a high ratio of skin to juice thus enhancing the flavours of the wine. Newly developed McCourt Vineyard is well on the way to doubling Howards Lane production within a few years, introducing Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc to our range of wines.

Our vines are pruned by hand and the grapes are selectively hand harvested allowing for only the finest of the crop to be used for wine-making. Local peasants, that is friends and family, ensure that harvest is a happy, albeit exhausting, time. There are panoramic views of the beautiful Gibbergunyah Forest from the deck and the property is ideally situated for a picnic after a walk through the Reserve.

The Wines 2005 Unwooded Chardonnay Newly released! Wine notes coming soon.

2003 Chardonnay Delicate citrus aromas of fresh lemon flowers and nectarines. Lingering creamy vanilla texture on the palate with a hint of butterscotch.

2004 Light Red Bursting with crushed strawberries and raspberries with a soft natural acidity giving the wine good structure. This lovely elegant balance is heightened by a touch of residual sugar. A great summer wine drunk lightly chilled. 2004 Merlot Currently out of stock 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Medium bodied, purple-red in colour. The bouquet is rich and ripe with sweet blackberry fruit and vanilla oak. Mouth filling blackcurrant, chocolate and vanilla flavours on the palate, balanced by soft tannins. 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon - awarded bronze medal at Southern Highlands wine show A medium bodied, deep red wine. Ripe blackberry and cassis flavours with delicate spice and vanilla undertones from the French oak barrel maturation. The firm but soft tannins ensure a full and lingering palate.

Joadja Winery
The small winery has a very much "hands on" approach, with some stainless steel and an emphasis on traditional wine making methods. These include minimal intervention, the use of oak fermentation and maturation and first quality fruit. Our cool climate means winemaking at optimal ambient temperatures.

Unlike most wineries, Joadja is open to the public. Visitors are free to inspect our winemaking and storage facilities at their leisure. Quite often you will find us in the middle of making or bottling wine. If you visit during vintage (typically March to May), you may find yourself in the middle of a hectic crush!

Joadja Vineyards aims to be a little unusual, even somewhat controversial, in the wines it releases. The area is different from other N.S.W. wine regions like the Hunter Valley or Mudgee. Consequently the opportunity exists for a small winery to achieve wines of great interest, quality and distinctiveness. Our emphasis will always be on producing wines with local varietal character and developing styles which suit the vineyard and the fruit from the region. While our small production excludes us from the vast majority of wine show categories, we have picked up a few commendations over the years. Our 1990 Cabernet/Malbec was warmly received by the Sydney Morning Herald in their annual "Reds Ahead" feature and selected among the top 25% of red wines in Australia, regardless of category. Huon Hooke wrote, "...a soft, warm, plummy/minty red...sweet, almost jammy, berry fruit with underplayed oak and a little stalkiness from the malbec." Our 1995 Cabernet/Malbec received a Bronze Medal at the Royal Hobart Wine Show in an open category. Most recently our 1997 Sauvignon Blanc (First Release) was awarded the only medal, a Bronze, for that variety from NSW at the Australian Small Winemakers Show. We shall continue to exhibit whenever we satisfy the rather narrow criteria of wine show categories.

Macquarie Pass National Park
Macquarie Pass National Park is part of the Illawarra escarpment south of Sydney. It contains a diverse range of habitats and wildlife including several rare and threatened plant and animal species. The steep sandstone ridges and gullies are topped by cliffs, and the park supports heathland, woodland, tall open forest and significant rainforest areas. It is an excellent bushwalking and picnicking area, with spectacular scenery and waterfalls.

Walking tracks. The two kilometre return Cascades Walk starts at the carpark on the northern side of the Illawarra Highway at the foot of Macquarie Pass. It follows the creek for about one kilometre to the Cascades where the water falls 20 metres. It is a delightful easy walk on a fine day and features signs along the way providing information about the park.
For a longer walk, about six kilometres return, try the Clover Hill Road, an old logging trail leading to Rainbow Falls and three smaller falls upstream on the Macquarie Rivulet. This track, unlike the Cascades Walk, is overgrown in places and is only recommended for experienced bushwalkers equipped with a compass.
The Glenview Track leads off Glenview Road, a left-hand turn-off in the middle section of Macquarie Pass when descending. This track is open to walkers only and has several branches which give you the chance to explore other parts of the tall open forest. It crosses a creek that plunges over the Cascades, and you return the way you came.

Picnics and barbecues. A picnic area is provided at the foot of Macquarie Pass on the northern side of the road. There are barbecues at the Cascades and Rivulet picnic areas, which are on opposite sides of the Illawarra highway.

Lookouts. The sheer cliffs and waterfalls of the escarpment provide spectacular scenery. There are panoramic views from a number of locations.
Management tracks in Macquarie Pass are suitable for bicycle riding.

Morning Tourist Drive
Highlights
Bowral, Fitzroy Falls, Wildes Meadow and Burrawang

Overview. This drive is designed to fit into a morning, but allow time for lots of shopping and an early morning refreshment. Then head south along Kangaloon Road, which becomes Sheepwash Road, then left onto Nowra Road and into Fitzroy Falls. After visiting the falls, take a drive through the rolling hills of Wildes Meadow and into Burrawang for lunch. The drive then takes you back down the Illawarra Highway and back to Bowral.

The Drive. Your journey begins in the busy town of Bowral. Spend time browsing through the many specialty shops and treat your self to an early morning coffee and cake, or even a hearty breakfast. From the town centre, travel down Bong Bong Street and veer left at the Kangaloon Road roundabout into Kangaloon Road. As you continue along Kangaloon Road you will pass through one of the older sections of Bowral, and the town’s historic cemetery can be seen on your right just before the Eridge Park Road roundabout.

Continue straight through this roundabout, and on your left you will see the recent urban expansion known as East Bowral. A little further along on your right is the famous Bong Bong Picnic Race Course. From here you will notice town dissolve into country as what is now Sheepwash Road winds through magnificent rural pastureland.

Upon reaching the crossroads of Sheepwash Road and the Illawarra Highway, go straight ahead and meander through some of the lushest dairy farm pasture in the Southern Highlands. The tiny rural village of Avoca will appear on your left and here you can see a real country primary school and village hall, famous for its old time dances. Keep an eye out for roadside stalls selling fresh produce and a not so fragrant “garden helper”.

The Sheepwash Road will take you to the intersection of Nowra Road where you turn left. This is Fitzroy Falls, a village set amongst the bushland of the Morton National Park. Just along on your left-hand side you will see the NPWS Visitor Information Centre. Park your car can enjoy a well-deserved coffee. The centre is well stocked with local information and products.

The walk to view the falls from the Visitors Centre is easy for people of all ages and abilities, with a boardwalk under the road to the viewing platform. For the more active, this is also a popular starting point for longer bushwalks. Check with the centre for walking maps.

From Fitzroy Falls turn left as you leave the carpark and continue along Nowra Road until you reach Myra Vale Road on your left. This is just past the Fitzroy Falls reservoir (a great place for a picnic or cup of tea with boiling water on tap, while you let the kids loose on the excellent playground equipment). Travel along Myra Vale Road, which becomes Pearsons Lane until you reach the Wildes Meadow intersection on your right. Travel along this road until you see Church Street on your left, which will take you right into Burrawang, an ideal spot for lunch.

The ever popular Burrawang Hotel serves light lunches with fine wines and refreshing beers. Sit near the window or outside to take in the most romantic country views. Burrawang is an historic village with a rare collection of authentic Colonial cottages.

You can now follow Church Street back to the Illawarra Highway and follow the signs to Bowral, or wherever the mood may take you.

The course is 5995m par 72 from the men’s tees. A number of twists and turns, in addition to small elevated greens, make it a good test. The creek which runs through the course has to be crossed 12 times during the round!
From the clubhouse, the Moss Vale layout appears hilly, but after the opening five holes it levels out. There are only 7 motorised carts for hire, indicative of most golfers desire to enjoy the walk around the course.

Peppers Craigieburn
Craigieburn was originally built in 1887 as a private country homestead and operated as a grazing property until 1909. The Property was sold and re-established as a country retreat and guest house and maintained an enviable reputation as one of the Southern Highlands premiere guest houses with families returning each year from first to third generations. Many famous guests have visited over the years, but of course Craigieburn remains discreet.

Reflecting the style and elegance of the original Craigieburn, a transformation of the interiors with stylish modern décor and artworks ensures Craigieburn will retain its reputation as one of the Southern Highlands premiere venues for leisure stays, conferencing, weddings and retreats.

The 36 hectare country estate boasts its own private 9 hole golf course for exclusive guest use and new guest facilities include a trout filled lake for fly fishing, gymnasium, billiards room and a beauty therapy room by Purity.

The conference room facilities and function room upgrades include a choice of two rooms with natural light and French doors opening onto landscaped gardens and terraces. A third room is ideal as a secretariat room, breakout space or use as a private dining or boardroom. An internal undercover courtyard provides one of the many unique spaces for conference or guest use.

The signature restaurant, Montforts, overlooking the picturesque garden estate has menus designed to delight your taste buds with local fresh produce, changing seasonally. The ultra modern décor and ambience of the licensed bar is sure to be the meeting place at Craigieburn.

Pygmy Hill Estate
Pygmy Hill Estate (Vignerons Licence No. 24011788) - A vineyard with soul. Named in memory of our son and brother, Andrew "Pygmy" Brazenor.
All our wines are made from hand picked grapes, rich with distinct fruit driven flavours, created by the Southern Highlands' cool climate and the unique rainshadow area of Canyonleigh.
The Estate was first planted with Chardonnay vines in 1996, and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1997. The first vintage in 1999 produced 540 bottles of Chardonnay and 400 bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon; both wines showed intense fruit flavour.
The vines have since matured and continue to produce high quality cool climate wines under the Pygmy Hill label.
The Canyonleigh vineyard has no problem ripening fruit. The flinty soil and extremely low rain fall produce consistently full flavoured fruit with very little disease. Slashing between rows is only needed twice a year, mid season and the day before harvest.
Each year fruit is hand picked by friends and neighbours, followed by a large celebration with food, wine and cleansing ales. The grapes are transported to Mundrakoona Estate' where winemaker Anton Balog turns them into fabulous Pygmy Hill wines.
