Mittagong "Isolation" is a new exhibition of lustre fired ceramics by John Kuczwal. Lustre firing is high stakes ceramics that involves some of the riskiest techniques in the business that can literally return pure gold in the form of incredible metallic glazes when everything goes to plan. Commonly called "Arabian" or "Persian" lustre (its origins can be traced to the Islamic world of the first Millenium), reduced pigment lustre as a medium carries no guarantee of success in its making. Despite our technical advances in kiln technology, raw materials analysis and the use of microprocessors to monitor and measure, pigment lustre continues to defy commercial production. John began to solo fire wood-fired lustre and to explore the technique of reduced pigment lustre in 1990 after over 30 years spent working in the legal sector.
